TYPES OF HARDWOOD FINISHES
COMMONLY USED IN RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL HARDWOOD APPLICATIONS.
Hardwood Floor Finishes
There is an art to integrating the type, grade, and cut of wood flooring with a custom finish in order to give you the look you want for your home, and Delta Plus Floors has chosen the finest finishes from around the world in order to bring the best protection and beauty to your new wood floor.
Penetrating Finishes
Sometimes called European Curing Oils or Penetrating Impact Oils, these types of finishes have been used in European countries for over 50 years, and they have always been “green” or environmentally friendly finishes due to the fact that they don’t contain harmful solvents. Penetrating finishes provide a durable hand-rubbed, oiled feel and appearance that’s fitting for any style of home whether it’s contemporary or historic. Moreover should you ever need to repair a scratch on your floor, these finishes are so easy to repair that any homeowner can do it. After the final coat, these finishes cure in just 12 hours! Delta Plus is factory-qualified with the following brands: Rubio Monocoat, Pallman Magic Oil, Synteko, WOCA, Osmo, Loba Hard Oil, etc.
Film Build Finishes
These finishes lay on the surface and will build with each consecutive coating. The two primary types in use today are (1) polyurethanes (both oil-based and water-based), and (2) tung oils.
Oil-based Polyurethanes
First introduced in the 1930’s, they are still one of the favorite and most popular finishes used today because of their durability, warmth, and amber look. Delta Plus Floors is competent in the use of ALL brands of oil and water-based polyurethane including the new uv and hybrid polyurethanes. We especially are fond of Poloplaz brand urethanes, which happens to be used on over 90% of all NBA basketball courts.
Water-based Polyurethanes
The water-based polyurethanes that we use are the most durable since they include a hardener additive. These finishes don’t usually have the warm amber look that you get with oil-based polyurethanes, but they will give you a clearer and more contemporary look.
Hybrid Polyurethanes
Certain circumstances require a hybrid finish that includes both oil-based and water-based polyurethanes, so rest assured that we will carefully assess your situation to determine what’s best for you. And by the way, all factory pre-finished flooring is finished with water-based polyurethane, and many of these floors are difficult or nearly impossible to repair or recoat; thus, these floors will only look as good as the day you put them down, whereas the customized site-finished floor that we install becomes more beautiful with age.
Tung Oil
This is a very unique floor finish. It is generally made from the tung bean or nut, and it has been used for centuries as a waterproof finish. Of all the film build finishes, tung oil’s first coat actually penetrates into the wood and is built up by each consecutive coat. There’s more warmth and ambering with tung oil compared to polyurethanes, and tung oil is one finish that definitely gets more beautiful with age!
